Among all of the elders, most of them have different yet unique habits of utilizing the bathroom. Making bathroom for elders as comfortable and uncomplicated will definitely help those elders, healthy or not so healthy.
Elders from different culture may reveal different habits. However, it is clear that usually most elders need to use the bathroom more often than young generations. The most common habit of elders in the bathrooms is that they usually are taking a really long time on using the bathroom. Why???
According to my group’s survey, this is because, elders, who usually have weak muscle, poor balance and slow reflex, find going into the bathroom difficult. After some researches and discussions, it is found that some elders who have difficulties on using the bathroom tend to be smelly. This is because those elders may not be able to use the bathroom properly, for example, most of the elders can’t urinate properly. Other than causing a mess in the bathroom, like make the floor wet and later it will hold a high risk for them to slip, their urine may splashed around their pants and they won’t be able to clean it. Another example is when elders find it difficult to bathe, then this make them lazy to bathe and causing their body to exhibit poor body odors. Then safety issue in the bathroom can also be the cause of why elders take a long time in the bathroom, or even some don’t want to go to the bathroom due to their difficulties. This is bad, because it is apparent that elders habitually go to the bathroom more often.
Safe Toilet for Elders
There are actually various different ways of making bathroom comfortable for elders. First of, you can start by putting lots of bar handles will make their movement in the bathroom easier. Then put non-slip mat everywhere so it will be safe for them. After that, try to have a toilet seat that can easily be adjusted. It is also possible to have a transfer bench in the bathroom, to help the elders who have difficulties on walking or on their balance. Putting a shower bench in the shower can also create a more comfortable space for them to shower.
Through all of the reasons, this is why it is very important to create a comfortable, safe, and usable bathroom for elders.
